Busy area real-estate agent says she’s ‘watching her back’ by focusing on better sleep
For Mary McFarland, a busy Chicago-area real estate agent, back pain is a daily reality. Mary, along with 2 percent of other women in the general population, suffers from scoliosis.
“All spines have curves,” Mary said. “It’s normal to have curvatures in the neck, upper trunk and lower trunk of your body. These curvatures are necessary to maintain proper balance in the alignment over your pelvis. Scoliosis is associated with abnormal curves – side-to-side curves in the spinal column.”
Unfortunately for Mary, the combination of scoliosis and long workdays on her feet has taken its toll on her back as well as her sleep.
“Being on my feet has resulted in sore legs and an even more sore back,” Mary said. “I spent many nights lying in bed, wide awake.”
Mary joins the ranks of the growing population suffering from back pain. Add a lumpy mattress and restless nights to the routine, and the problem becomes significantly magnified.
Chiropractor Dr. Dana Landin, of Geneva, Ill., said he encourages his patients to sleep … and sleep well.
“One of the reasons people are not healthy is because the quality of their sleep is less than adequate,” Dr. Landin said. “Our body needs rest. To understand that a lack of quality sleep will result in bodily disease and malfunction is a huge realization. Quality sleep is as important as quality nutrition and quality exercise.”
Experts agree that back pain is most likely caused by many different factors working together at once. Combine factors like lifting or sitting too long, with stress and poor quality sleep, and the result is a bad back.
Dr. Landin emphasized the spine needs adequate support while recumbent.
“Millions of nerve fibers are passing through tunnels in the spine, and if the spine is not supported for the hours we are in bed, not only can the spine misalign during sleep, but nerve tissue can become compromised as a result of spinal misalignment.”
“The spine, which houses our central nervous, acts as a gateway to our peripheral nervous system. The spine necessitates the best support available. It’s that important!”
Treating your spine and back with TLC should be a top priority. Adequate sleep and proper back care rely, literally, on the foundation of the mattress.
Dr. Landin said he supports custom-mattress manufacturing because “it makes perfect sense.”
“Since everyone’s body and spine are different, even between spouses, customized mattresses are ideal,” Dr. Landin said.
Mary agrees. “Prior to buying my customized mattress, my sleep was literally cut in half from restlessness attributed to my sore legs and back pain. Since I bought an IntraTouch™ mattress a year ago, my sleep has improved immensely. I am able to get out of bed easier and feel much more rejuvenated to face challenges of the day.”
The IntraTouch sleep solution is founded on the premise of personalization and customization.
“So many of our customers have a life parallel to Mary’s,” sleep expert Sharon Ginn said. “With their best interest in mind, we comfort test every customer and provide a Craftsman Analysis to find out what their individual needs are. There is no such thing as the ‘cookie-cutter’ mattress.”
Dr. Landin echoed Ginn’s sentiments and cited the exclusive IntraTouch™ Sleep Technology as an example.
“The IntraTouch system is revolutionary and well thought out,” Dr. Landin said. “IntraTouch supports the spine’s most common pressure point s, like no other, hands down.”
Ginn said IntraTouch™ Sleep Technology incorporates age-old philosophies of the human anatomy and mathematics to provide the body with the balance and support needed for a good night’s sleep.
It utilizes varying contours that are strategically mapped to similar proportions in the human body. These contours provide the balanced support the body needs while sleeping.
“As with all of our mattresses, we customize the mattress specifically to meet our customers’ needs,” Ginn said. “Our Craftsman-Direct prices enable us to offer our high-quality products at a lower price.”
